Organic Gardening Books – 6 Best Gardening Books For Beginners   by Phil Nauta

These organic gardening books are those that have had the most profound effect on me, and I have read a lot of gardening books. But these books are the best of the best, in my opinion.

Botany / Plants Book

The Secret Life of Plants. The authors of Secrets Of The Soil put out amazing organic gardening books and this classic is a look at the world of plants and their relationship to us. It goes into how plants can think, how they respond to Music, and how they respond to being loved/being threatened, yet sprinkled throughout are many lessons we can actually use in the garden. Anyone who believes plants are sentient beings will love this book. A must read.

Microorganism Book

Teaming with Microbes. Healthy organic soil is teeming with life – not just earthworms and insects, but a staggering multitude of bacteria, fungi, and other microorganisms. These guys make the benefits of cultivating the soil food web available to a wide audience, from us organic gardening and farming addicts to weekend gardeners who simply want to grow healthy, vigorous plants without resorting to chemicals. I highly recommend this as one of the organic gardening books for you.

Organic Soil Management Book

The Non-Toxic Farming Handbook. This book is not only for farmers! It is a successful integration of diverse techniques and technologies of classical organic farming, Albrecht-style soil fertility balancing, and Reams-method organic soil and plant testing and analysis, and it is great for organic home gardeners. It covers fertility inputs, in-the-field testing, foliar feeding, refractometers, tillage, livestock nutrition, moon cycles and subtle energies, and more.

Permaculture Book

Gaia’s Garden. This is one of my favorite organic gardening books for beginners. It describes an organic gardening system that combines the best features of wildlife habitat, edible landscapes, and conventional gardens into a self-renewing landscape that lets nature do most of the work. It has many good design principles, so it is partially a design book. This is my favorite introduction to permaculture because it is a fun read that really simplifies the topic. It’s not as comprehensive as Mollison’s works, but a great intro. I love this book.

Vegetable Gardening Book

The Gardener’s A-Z Guide to Growing Organic Food. This is one of those organic gardening books that shows you how to select, grow, harvest, and store more than 765 varieties of vegetables, herbs, fruits and nuts. Not all that much info on growing from seed and transplanting, but a pretty darn big encyclopedia of food plants and good information on vegetable garden layout.

General Organic Gardening Book

Working With Nature – Shifting Paradigms. This organic gardening book was the first written by one of my gardening mentors, Heide Hermary, founder of Gaia College. It describes ecologically sound organic soil and water management practices and introduces the concept of landscape health management. It summarizes some of the most important information from other books listed on this page, and more importantly, it makes connections between seemingly disparate topics.

This Rhino re-release of Amazing Grace is at least as much a work of love as of marketing. The sound is beefier and clearer, but most importantly, the two-day church sessions are included. So, there’s much more church (specifically, Reverend James Cleveland’s marvelous orating) on the record, as well as contemporaryisms such as a cool organ rendition of George Harrison’s “My Sweet Lord.” Originall…

Murnau changed the name and ghastly appearance of his villain, but this unauthorized version of Bram Stoker’s Dracula couldn’t fool the Stoker estate, and it became the center of a lawsuit that almost resulted in its complete destruction. '89 Live in Japan

’89 Live in Japan

$9.99

Sometime in 1992/1993 a revamped Quiet Riot featuring vocalist Kevin DuBrow with Bob Rondinelli on drums (around this time Rondinelli had also filled in on an Aerosmith gig one night when Joey Kramer wasn’t available — call him Mr. Fill-In) performed at a little-known club in Billerica, Massachusetts called Mr. Tipps. It is one of those suburban gigs we call “the last rung on the rock & roll ladder” and it’s a pity because Quiet Riot had more than just a clever name, and more than the cachet of being the professional birthplace of guitar wizard Randy Rhodes. To those who don’t know the story, DuBrow faced a mutiny by the band he founded and Pasha Records released an album in 1988 with two different members, titling the disc, interestingly enough, after the first Japanese release by the original group. This DVD, ’89 Live in Japan, comes from that strange lineup in between and features vocalist Paul Shortino of the group Rough Cutt as well as bassist Sean McNabb and an uncredited Jimmy Waldo — keyboard player from the groups New England and Alcatraz. Why Waldo is treated like a hired hand is one of those unique situations which seemed to develop after Flo & Eddie called Mountain’s organ player Steve Knight “the most useless man in rock & roll.” The statement was far from accurate, of course, but it was humorous and Mott the Hoople and Aerosmith would both push keyboardists to the side and pretty much off-stage after that infamous quip. Though the 1988 self-titled Quiet Riot album faced horrible reviews and little or no commercial acceptance, this DVD is actually quite enjoyable. As a live band, Q.R. had that long-hair-’80s-thing down pat. What replaces original vocalist DuBrow’s personality is a very slick and well-executed heavy metal show. “Stay With Me Tonight” might not be a rock & roll classic, but it comes off well live and along with the nine in-concert tracks there is a bonus of the video shot for “Stay With Me.” This is no mere clone band going t…

On their sardonically named third album, 3, New York City’s multi-ethnic Electroputas tell you right off the bat that they are sonic absurdists, favoring discordance over grace, but they are also unrepentant groovemeisters of a supreme order, taking a decidedly Krautrock approach to extended jams with undeniable hooks. The Social Registry website says it best: “From a storm of musical chaos emerges the trio Electroputas with chunks of noise, swathes of psychedelic fervor, and large dashes of complete freakout fever.” All but the most hardcore of noiseniks will want to fast-forward through the first track, “International Harvest,” as its two minutes and change of wordless screams, growls, stutters, and chants seem to go on for ten times that length. But anyone who appreciates a disjointed yet rollicking groove will be rewarded with track two, “AA,” and its chordal bass (recalling Spinal Tap’s “Big Bottom”!), shimmying organ, spazzy guitar, and little Japanese girl vocals reminiscent of Cibo Matto or Deerhoof. The latter band’s complex instrumentals are also referenced on the herky-jerky guitar/bass duel of “Echo Temptation,” as is the late, great Thinking Fellers Union Local 282. “Master Triangle” is a sincere homage to one of the band’s biggest influences, Can, a bass-driven piledriver (as are most of the songs here), especially in the vocals ripped straight from that band’s inimitable Damo Suzuki. “Profundo Rosso” is a post-punk/free jazz guitarist’s wet dream as a tinny electric careens from speaker to speaker, accompanied by vocals seemingly in Spanish, French, and Italian, garbled through some of the bandmembers’ Japanese accents (most of the lyrics are unintelligible, quite possibly intentionally, except for this classic couplet from “AA”: “I like the taste of whiskey on my lips/So you said, my superstar”). And the utter meltdown of “More” will make you want to light your stereo on fire and throw it through a tenth-story window (in a good…

Norwegian avant-garde quartet Supersilent lost drummer Jarle Vespestad at the end of 2008, and rather than replace him (their music having never been particularly rhythm-driven), they opted to continue on as a trio. However, in so doing they all abandoned their own musical comfort zones to one degree or another. 9 was recorded over the course of three days at Henie Onstad arts center, outside Oslo, and finds each of the three remaining members — Arve Henriksen, best-known as a trumpeter; Helge Sten (electronics, keyboards, guitar); and keyboardist St? le Storl? kken — playing Hammond organ and nothing else. This could be a recipe for ultimate tedium, but it’s not. These guys stray far away from the Jimmy Smith/Larry Young school of Hammond playing, and instead head into a subterranean cave network of near-ambient interplay reminiscent of classic, early Tangerine Dream titles like Zeit and Atem. The disc’s four minimally titled tracks (“9.1″ through “9.4″) offer lots of oozing and throbbing, with just a few hints of melody here and there. Highly recommended even to Supersilent newcomers. ~ Phil Freeman, Rovi

A Chip Off the Old Block [2008 Bonus Tracks]

A Chip Off the Old Block [2008 Bonus Tracks]

$11.99

The circumstances surrounding the recording of this album are as important as the music you will hear and enjoy. Inspired by the songbook of Count Basie, tenor saxophonist Stanley Turrentine and his wife of four years, organist Shirley Scott, planned on recording with a septet, and went into the studio with that band on October 12, 1963, but those sessions were scrapped. On October 14, two tracks were finished and included here, but October 21 saw the band pared down to a quintet, and the results were acceptable. Trumpeter Blue Mitchell’s contributions were quite desirable, he was the second lead voice in the ensemble, and success was attained. Turrentine and Mitchell played together in the 1954 edition of the Earl Bostic ensemble, and happily renew their musical friendship. The Basie evergreen “One O’Clock Jump” leads off the date swinging with Turrentine and Mitchell trading melody lines before an outstanding solo from the trumpeter. A first take from the larger ensemble is described by Bob Blumenthal in the liner notes as ragged, but perhaps further attempts would have smoothed out the scruffy mood. The tenor man sounds as if he is feeding the melody line to trombonist Tom McIntosh and baritone saxophonist Charles Davis ad lib instead of reading charts, although it doesn’t sound all that uninspired. Neal Hefti’s “Cherry Point” with the quintet is an easy swinging, tenor/organ trade off, in a much slower tempo with the septet, two minutes longer, a bit sluggish, perhaps too rich, but soulfully coming together at the coda. Dedicated to Nashville DJ Hoss Allen, the classic road time shuffle “Blues in Hoss’ Flat” chips off many familiar phrases in the main frame, while Hefti’s simmering “Midnight Blue” (not Kenny Burrell’s version that Turrentine also played on) gives Scott room to subtract one color and shade the unison melody with the tenor and trumpeter. The lone ballad “Spring Can Really Hang You Up the Most” emphasizes Turrentine’s soul quotient wit…

 A Poet's Life

A Poet’s Life

$50.99

Anyone looking for the punk rock sound of Rancid on Tim Armstrong’s first solo album, A Poet’s Life, might be left wondering where the loud guitars and charging tempos have gone. Instead with able backing from L.A. reggae revivalists the Aggrolites, Armstrong has crafted a grooving, fun-filled modern reggae album, influenced by ska, rock steady, roots reggae, and dancehall and filtered through a modern pop-punk attitude. The sound of the record (nimble, jumped-up, and retro but fully modern) impresses instantly, but as the record goes on, Armstrong’s voice emerges as the star. His raspy croon, staccato toasting, and ragged shout fit the reggae sound surprisingly well. Sure, Rancid always had a huge Jamaican influence, but erasing all traces of punk from the sound is a risk. The first four songs will erase any doubts about that risk paying off and just might have you thinking the record’s going to be a no-holds-barred classic. “Wake Up” is a rollicking, dubby warning to a friend to shape up, “Hold On” rides a wobbly organ line and a huge hook, “Into Action” is a slamming ska-pop song featuring vocals from teen pop punkette Skye Sweetnam of all people, and the rock steady ballad “Translator” is a sick-hearted but determined ode to perseverance with a brilliant Armstrong vocal. The second half fades a bit as the lyrical clunkers add up; Armstrong falls into clich? on “Take This City” and dives headlong into inanity on “Oh No,” where he professes his love of L.A., nightlife, and rock & roll. Still, tunes like the silly but sweet love song “Lady Demeter” and the righteous “Inner City Violence” (which brings some necessary blood and fire to the proceedings) make up for the minor stumbles, and the whole record ends up being quite enjoyable. Armstrong may not exactly be a poet, but anyone who’s heard any Rancid knows he makes great records. Now we know he can do it on his own. ~ Tim Sendra, Rovi

 Aaron Neville's Soulful Christmas

Aaron Neville’s Soulful Christmas

$13.99

Aaron Neville’s Soulful Christmas is at once familiar yet progressive, traditional, prayerful, heartfelt, fun, and sexy. Neville lends his angelic voice to timeless holiday standards, resulting in one of the more compelling American holiday albums of the 1990s. Neville’s treatment of classics such as “O Holy Night,” “Silent Night,” and “O Little Town of Bethlehem” is absolutely stirring, and he infuses these lullabies with so much warmth and sincerity that they can even touch the hardest, most cynical audiences. Neville also covers more contemporary tunes, such as “Please Come Home for Christmas,” and augments his warm renditions of “The Christmas Song” and “White Christmas” with classic pop arrangements, filled with lush strings, piano, and even saxophone. The real gems, however, include the irresistibly swingin’ “Such a Night,” which should become mandatory for any Christmas party, and the equally intoxicating, hand clapping “Louisiana Christmas Day.” The album ends on a spiritual tone with the tender “Star Carol” and the moving, organ-accompanied “The Bells of St. Mary’s.” Neville wholly succeeds in crafting a fun, Cajun-spiced yet traditional Christmas album, which manages to capture all of the joy, passion, spirituality ,and nostalgia which goes along with the holiday season. ~ Jose F. Promis, Rovi
